Abecedarian for Larchmont

Any day I feel like it, I
begin to drift.
Close to the curb, I
divide the bike lane
entry
from the sidewalk.
Going no place in particular,
heaving heavy breaths
in the heat of the summer,
just walking.
Kicking rocks aimlessly,
lollygagging and loitering,
my aunt’s doppleganger in the mail call window.
New babies shriek
operas,
people people watching,
questions on stranger’s tongues.
Religious tradition;
slurping iced tea,
trying to tan,
using Harper’s phone to call in an order to Wine and Cheese.
Vanishing into a boutique,
window shopping, and the trinket story display still emphasizes an
‘X-Mas’ Sale. Below, a figurine of the late Queen Elizabeth advertises a
zebra print stationary set.
Xylophones shine in the toy shop
window, gleaming rainbow.
Voraciously, children devour ice cream, warning
usurping parents away from the melted scoops.
teenagers walk by in clusters,
sporting overpriced leisure wear and
reprimanding their parents over the phone.
Quiet young couples chat in hushed whispers,
posing hypothetical would you rathers, something about
octopus or squid.
Nannies chase after school children in Catholic School uniforms, and
Millions of papers fly from the tiny backpacks. They
Laugh.
