Asking For Money on Broadway
the woman wants money for
a grilled cheese sandwich
she says gimme money so
I can buy a grilled cheese
I’m hungry too
I’m on my way to the store
to buy whatever I want
it’s the aggressiveness
in the way she asks and her tone
not directing her eyes towards
anyone in particular
and that she’s so drugged up
that make me not want to give her
money
so I act like I don’t see her at all
Mother Said
don’t be in such a rush
my mother said
don’t rip the tag off
you’ll tear it
use a scissor
she advised
don’t fill up on bread
my mother said
don’t eat so fast
she said
you sound like
a fishwife when
you talk that way
she chided
people will like you
if you smile
