The Impossible World

“…I believe//in the world//because it is/impossible…”

—George Oppen, “Myth of the Blaze”

consider the flight of the hummingbird
impossible to imagine
          such a creature
          to fly backward

impossible the mind
that considers outward to
nebulae
          to see
          o taste and believe

science the lonely
search into
          what is impossible
          immense
all around

a journey by
          proxy
for turning and turning
          loneliness

an immense journey
          into tense and astringent time
          long overdue

and how simple words
are best
          like love
          and you
