Allison Burris | I Never Used to Believe in Destiny

I Never Used to Believe in Destiny

but then I learned or logicked that free will
is limited to dialed-in cause settings
& cause is another word for fate
in a predetermined choice set.
          Coded.
Codified.

Your mother was born with all her eggs
           all your possibilities.

And maybe our lives are too short
to understand our scale
or what lives in the ocean.

The consequence is I keep trying
to find the right glasses for 20/20 hindsight.
I keep looking for the woman in charge
of cutting the strings.

Allison Burris grew up in the Pacific Northwest and currently lives in Oakland, California. She received her MLIS from San Jose State University and her poetry appears or is forthcoming in After Happy Hour Review, Passionfruit, Opal Age Tribune, Avalon Literary Review, and elsewhere.
